Golf teams post strong outings at Jim English - Centre Invite
Hosting its annual Jim English - Centre College Invitation, the Centre men's and women's golf teams placed third and second respectively, finishing as the top Division III team on both sides of the event Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Danville Country Club in Danville, Ky.
The men's team placed third out of 10 schools with an overall team score of 295. Lindsey Wilson College won the team trophy with a 287, followed by Bellarmine University at 291 and then Centre, which tied Spalding University for third place.
Senior Tyler Griffith (Marengo, Ind.) paced the Colonels with a score of 73 to tie for eighth place overall. Junior Tyler Current (Louisville, Ky.), sophomores Chris Morris (Maysville, Ky.) and Lyndon Jones (Taswell, Ky.), and freshmen John Hester (Louisville, Ky.) and Max Manning (Lebanon, Ky.) all tied for 19th place only one stroke behind Griffith with a 74.
Lindsey Wilson's Travis Radford was the event's overall individual winner, shooting a score of 69. Radford was the only player to finish under 70 on the the 6,405-yard par 72 course.
The Centre women placed second overall out of six schools with a team score of 325. The only school to finish ahead of the Colonels was Division II member Bellarmine, which posted a team score of 324, only one shot ahead of Centre. Transylvania University rounded out the top three with a score of 334. The Colonels score of 324 is a new all-time low in Centre women's golf history.
Freshman Emily Bachert (Bowling Green, Ky.) shot a 74 to lead the Colonels and place second overall. Junior Katie McKenna (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) also placed in the top five with an 80 to finish in fourth place.
Junior Marissa Cianchetti (St. Charles, Ill.), sophomore Paige Burton (Frankfort, Ky.) and senior Daphne Fisher (Vine Grove, Ky.) rounded out the top five for Centre. Cianchetti tied for eighth place with an 84. Burton shot an 87 to tie for 14th, while Fisher tied for 18th with a 90.
Bellarmine's Sarah Duplessis was in the individual medallist on the women's side posting a score of 69. Like the men's side, Duplessis was the lone player to shoot a sub 70 score.
Up next for the Centre men is the Manchester College Invitational at the Honeywell Country Club Tuesday, Sept. 15. The Centre women will next compete at the Hanover College Invitational Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13-14. The Colonels will play at Spring Hills Golf Course on Saturday and then at Sunrise Golf Course on Sunday.
