Centre honors Athletes of the Year
Centre College held its annual Honors Convocation last night, Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in Newlin Hall. Three senior student athletes were awarded the Centre College Male and Female Student Athlete of the Year honor. David Horne (Louisville, Ky.)and Eric Moore (Bowling Green, Ky.) were named co-male athletes of the year and Eileen Schilling (Louisville, Ky.) was named female athlete of the year.
This award is presented to those who are are found to be outstanding in all areas and best exemplifies a balanced commitment to academics, athletics, service and leadership.
David Horne has been captain of the men's soccer team for the past two years. As captain, Horne has lead the team to a cumulative winning record of 25-7-3. This year David was selected the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Senior College Men's Scholar All-America Soccer Team.
Horne captained the Centre team through another winning season this year, finishing 12-4-1. He also received the first team All-Region selection this year along with a first team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honor. Dave is a three time All-SCAC player and finished runner up in the 2005 and 2006 years as defensive player of the year. Dave was also named to the NSCAA All Region 1st Team and was honored by D3Kicks as a regional All-American. David now plays professionally for the Cincinnati Kings in the USL D2 league. He will be returning to Centre next year as assistant coach to Jeb Burch. Horne has high hopes of leading the team once again, although now from a different aspect of the game.
Eric Moore was n amed captain of the men's baseball team this past year. Moore is a the three-time first team all-SCAC pick and three-time Academic Honor Roll selection. He has also been a three-time team MVP. Recently the first baseman became the 16th player in
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) to record 200 hits in a college career. Moore entered the 2007 season ranked second in the SCAC history with a career batting average of .418 and is ranked eighth in league history by averaging 1.44 hits per game. Moore is second in the SCAC by averaging 1.11 RBI's per game. He is ranked fourth in the conference by averaging .34 doubles per game. Eric will be attending graduate school at the University of Kentucky to obtain his masters of science and sports leadership.
Eileen Schilling has dominated woman's cross country and track over her four years at Centre College. This year, she earned all-SCAC recogniti on for the fourth straight year. Schilling, recently named Academic All-American for cross country, holds three of Centre College's top individual times. This year she finished the season seventh in the region of 177 runners. Schilling, a two-time cross country All-American, finished with a time of 26:06 in her fourth trip to the NCAA Championships. In track, Eileen finished third in the 10,000 meter run this year. Her time (38:12) garnered her All-SCAC honors. She followed up her top-three performance with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meter run. The senior runner still holds the SCAC record for the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs. Schilling has captained the distance team the last four years. Eileen is without a doubt the most honored runner, male or female, to have attended Centre College.
