Colonels' season ends with 6-4 loss to Millsaps

The Millsaps College softball team rallied to score three runs in the final two innings to defeat Centre College 6-4 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament (SCAC) elimination game Saturday, April 26 at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.

The two teams held each other scoreless through two innings, but in the bottom of the third, Centre jumped on a scoreboard when Courtney Frye's fielder's choice scored Rebecca Rhule to give the Colonels and early 1-0 lead.

Millsaps wasted little time in answering, scoring two runs the very next inning. Sam Hill led off with a single to right field. After a wild pitch allowed Smith to advance to second, Jennifer McKinley hit a two-run home run to left field to put the Majors up 2-1.

Centre came back the very next inning and tied the game. Following a fly out to start the inning, Amber Mills and Julia Hubbard hit back-to-back doubles to even the score at one apiece.

The two teams continued to add to their run total in the fifth. Millsaps got a run-scoring single from Hill to make the score 3-2, only to see the Colonels score two runs of their own on a run-scoring double by Mills and an unearned run off an error.

The Majors responded again, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to go back in front 5-4. Millsaps added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Laura Litton closed out the game in the bottom of the inning for her second save of the season.

Brittney McAllister tossed five innings for the win. McAllister allowed four runs - two earned - on six hits with two strikeouts to improve to 6-5 on the season. Tyler Travis suffered the loss in a complete-game effort for Centre. Travis allowed six runs - five earned - on 10 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Hill paced the Millsaps offensive attack with a 3 for 4 performance. Hill scored two runs and drove in another. Jessica Clincy had two hits and McKinley finished with two runs driven in. Mills led Centre with a 3 for 4 effort. She scored a pair of runs and drove in another in the loss.

Millsaps will advance to play Trinity University Sunday, April 27 at noon. Game two, if necessary will begin at 2 p.m. or 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.
