DePauw downs Millsaps 3-1 to advance to Sunday

DePauw University's Megan Soultz allowed a run in the first inning, but that is all the Millsaps Majors would get as the Tigers scored two runs in the third and another in the fifth to defeat the Majors 3-1 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament game, Saturday, April 26 at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.

Millsaps (19-13) broke through early. Tiffany Ladner led off with single and moved to second base on another single by Sam Hill. A Jennifer McKinley sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base with one out in the inning. Karoline Kremers then singled to the left side scoring Ladner and giving the Majors an early 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until the top of the third. Emma Minx led off the DePauw half of the inning with a solo home run to centerfield to tie the game at one apiece. The Tigers added another run in the inning on a Rachel Gill run-scoring single and DePauw led 2-1.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Brianne Weeks and Soultz did the rest shutting down the Majors the final six innings.

Soultz allowed only four hits and struck out six with no walks to up her record to 31-1. Millsaps starter Kasey Thibod also went the distance allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Thibod falls to 8-6 on the season.

Gill and Minx each had two hits and an rbi on the day, while four difference Majors had one hit each.

DePauw (35-1), the nation's top ranked team, will advance to Sunday play, while Millsaps will meet the winner of Centre College and Austin College at 6 p.m. tonight for the right to play DePauw tomorrow.
