DePauw scores eight in seventh to defeat Southwestern 12-5 Down by one run in the bottom of the seventh, the DePauw University baseball team scored eight times to take the lead and finish with a 12-5 win over Southwestern University in game two of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Baseball Tournament Friday, April 25 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky. Southwestern's Mark Noggle opened the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning to right field. The Tigers answered one inning later on a two-run single by Jeremy Dickinson to put DePauw ahead 2-1. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Pirates struck again. Todd Boone walked to lead off the inning followed by a single by Matt Clark. Designated hitter John Wooten then hit a three-run home run to right field to give Southwestern a 4-2 lead. The lead did not last long as the Tigers scored two in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a Jack Gavin run-scoring single and a Dickinson sacrifice fly. The Pirates came right back and scored a run in the seventh on a two-out error by the Tigers to go back in front 5-4, only to see DePauw scored eight runs on only five hits in the bottom of the inning to go ahead for good. Southwestern pitchers surrendered four walks in the inning in addition to an error. Gavin had a two-run double and Matt Kleine had two-run single in the inning. John Tschantz went all nine-innings allowing five runs - four earned - on seven hits. He walked only two and struck out 10 to improve to 8-3 on the season. Brantley Freeman fell to 3-5 with the loss in not recording an out in relief of starter Wes Willis. Kleine and Gavin ended the day with four hits apiece. Kleine drove in two and scored two more, while Gavin drove in three and scored another. Wooten and Noggle had multi-hit games for the Pirates with two hits each. DePauw will meet Trinity University at noon Saturday, April 26, while Southwestern will fight to stay alive against Millsaps College at 3:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
