Majors and Tigers to play again after Millsaps 10-5 win

Playing in its third elimination game in two days, the Millsaps College baseball team staved off elimination once again rallying from down 5-2 to defeat Trinity University 10-5 Sunday, April 27 as part of the 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament (SCAC) at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.

After the Tigers scored two runs in the top of the first, the Majors answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs of their own. One of those runs came off the bat of Hunter Owen on solo home run to right field.

Trinity (31-13) added a solo tally in the third and two more in the fourth to go ahead 5-2. Millsaps (29-17) went scoreless in the bottom of the inning as did the Tigers in the top of the fifth, but the score changed in the home half of the fifth inning.

Following two strikeouts to start the inning, Tate Hendrix and Owen singled. Derrik Boland then singled scoring two runs to cut the lead to 5-4. Will Hawkins then doubled down the left-field line to score Boland and the game was tied at five apiece.

The Majors added three more runs in the sixth inning courtesy of a two-run home run by Owen, his second of the game and 15th of the season, and a Hendrix run-scoring double. One inning later, the Majors added to their lead with two runs on a two-out, two-run single by Abrams.

That was enough for Millsaps' relief pitcher Brandon Ingram, who threw 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball to finish the game and improve to 3-2. Ingram allowed only three hits and struck out five while walking only one. Ryan Poffenroth took the loss for Trinity allowing eight runs on 10 hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out nine in falling to 2-3 on the season.

Once again, the middle of the Millsaps' lineup (two through five hitters) came up big combining to go 12-20 (.600) with seven runs scored and eight driven in. Owen led the way going 4 for 5 with three runs and three rbi's. Hawkins and Hendrix had three hits apiece, while boland drove in three runs. Trinity's Kevin Jackson and Stosh Hoover had two hits each in the loss, while Kevin Calbick scored twice.

With the Majors winning, the two teams will return later in the day to play again for the SCAC Championship at 2:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
