Making History
November 4, 2008
Welcome back reader! It certainly feels like ages since the last installment of This Week in Soccer. Yet, fear not, we are back and have much to relay! However, before commence with the latest news, let's first take a look back toward the week of October 20th-26th.
October 20th – 26th
This week came together remarkably well for us. On Wednesday (Oct. 22 nd ), the Reserve team competed in their final match of the season at Lindsey Wilson College. Netting four goals, the ladies went on to defeat the Blue Raiders, 4-1. Scoring on the outing were: Elizabeth Hooper (2), Anna Horne (1), and Chelsea Stanley (1). With Tuesday's win, the ladies achieved a perfect season – winning all of their matches and suffering no losses. In addition to winning all of their games, the Reserves posted two shut-outs, netted 16 goals, and allowed only two goals against them. We certainly want to congratulate them on their accomplishments this season.
By Friday, (Oct. 24 th ) the rain had set in and the chill of winter was upon us. Rather than working through a series of monotonous indoor games in the gymnasium, we held a chalk-talk session instead. As the team walked into the classroom, they noticed the scouting report for the upcoming game against DePauw displayed in a most unusual way. Parts of the report were missing and the ladies quickly found that Coach Hoffman intended for them to fill-in the blanks. Naturally, the activity lent itself to moments of comic relief as the girls tried to fill in the blanks with witty answers. Making our way to the final sections of the scouting report, each player was asked to stand and name a characteristic that makes us a strong team. To make things interesting, Coach Hoffman eliminated the option of naming individuals – so they really had to think.
Despite the challenge, the ladies filled the board with relative ease. Before we knew it, 33 strengths were displayed on the board and only one remained. That spot was filled with the word foundation. A major strength of this program is our foundation which consists of history, values, dedication, commitment, and sacrifice. Like the foundation of a building, there are some cracks and, at times, a little bit of shifting. However, today this program stands tall because our foundation is so strong.
As we were preparing to leave the classroom someone noticed there was still one more blank on the board – a lone weakness. Wait , she exclaimed. What is the one weakness? Without hesitation, senior Mollie Sheron turned and said, “Not using our strengths!” In that brief moment, her simple answer put the entire exercise into perspective.
Later that night, we met at Coach Hoffman's house for our Annual Pumpkin Carving event. The ladies always enjoy this night and each year the creativity gets even more impressive! Pictured below are a few examples of the designs. To see more, please click here and you will be redirected to our photo page.

By Saturday (Oct. 25 th ), the rain had cleared and the campus was buzzing with Alumni – it was Homecoming! On the field, the ladies were ready to achieve a feat that had not been accomplished in the history of the Women's Soccer program – defeating DePauw University. Once the whistle blew the game was every bit as challenging as we thought it would be. However, the ladies stuck to the game plan and executed it very well! In the 34 th minute, junior Elizabeth Hooper collected a loose ball on the flank and raced toward the goal. Cutting to the middle of the field, she then found teammate Brittany Garr who was unmarked just outside the penalty area. Garr turned; first, away from the goal, but quickly cut it back and ripped a shot from approximately 25 yards out. The ball sailed toward the goal and over the goalkeeper's head. Pinging off the far post, it ricocheted into the goal before finally coming to rest in the opposite side netting. We would battle through the second half and dodge a few close calls, before the whistle blew and the game had ended. Final score: Centre – 1, DePauw – 0.
With that win, we had created another mark in the Centre Women's Soccer history books. A moment we will hopefully treasure (and talk about) for some time to come. Carrying the excitement of the win into the next practice week, it was only fitting that we should witness yet another addition to Centre's record books.
Week of October 27 th – November 2 nd
Culminating a long week of practice, we prepared to honor our senior class during the halftime of our match with Maryville College. It felt like only yesterday these young ladies were checking into preseason training camp, wide-eyed and scared stiff at what college soccer had in store for them. Now here they stand, mature women who have many honors to their name and an extremely bright future ahead them.
Sunday afternoon (Nov. 2 nd ), with eleven seniors leading the way, we defeated Maryville College 1-0. What made the event even more special was the fact that the game-winning goal was scored by a senior, Erin Menard. Though we didn't realize it at the time, the goal was Menard's 58 th career goal which has earned her a spot in the SCAC All-Time Leading Scorer's Top-5. It is an honor she is truly deserving of and has worked diligently to achieve over these past four years. Erin's achievement is not only a tribute to her personal hard work and dedication, but is also a reflection of this group as a whole.
Now, with the final games of our regular season fast approaching, we are hoping to create a few more special moments. Friday night, we will face Trinity University at 8:00 pm. We conclude the season on Sunday afternoon with Southwestern University at 1:00 pm. Both games will be held on Centre's campus at Colonels' Field.
As always, until next time...
GO COLONELS!!
