Centre, Asbury tie 1-1 in men's soccer
After battling through two periods in regulation and two overtime periods, the Centre College men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Asbury College in a non-conference match, Saturday, Oct. 14, in Danville, Ky.
With the tie, the Colonels' overall record moves to 10-1-1, while Asbury's record now stands at 5-6-2. The tie is the first of the season for the #17 ranked Colonels and Centre's first since a 1-1 tie against DePauw University, October 30, 2005.
Asbury struck first when Richie Menear scored the match's first goal 21:21 into the first period. The score looked to remain that way going into the half, but Centre junior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) found the back of the net with only 0:16 left in the first period to tie the match at one apiece.
The goal was Hoskins' second of the season, while senior David Horne (Louisville, Ky.) tallied his fourth assist of the season on the score.
The two teams battled through a scoreless second half as well as two scoreless overtime periods and the match ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Centre out shot Asbury 16-5 on the night and held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) recorded two saves in the match.
Centre will return to conference play, Friday, Oct. 20, when it travels to San Antonio, Texas to play the #1 ranked Trinity University Tigers. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. CST.
