Horne goal lifts Centre to 10th win of season
Senior David Horne (Louisville, Ky.) connected on a penalty kick midway through the second half and the defense earned its seventh shutout of the season as the Centre College men's soccer team defeated Elmhurst College 1-0, Thursday, Oct. 12, in Terre Haute, Ind.
With the win, the Colonels winning streak extends to seven straight matches, and pushes their overall record to 10-1 on the year, while Elmhurst drops to 3-6-4 overall. The match, which was postponed earlier in the year and moved to a central location, was played on the campus of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with neither team able to find the back of the net. Through 45 minutes, Centre out shot Elmhurst 11-3 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The match remained scoreless until the 74:31 mark in the second half when Horne was awarded a penalty kick and connected for his fifth goal of the season for the game-winner.
The Colonels also controlled much of the second half out shooting Elmhurst 11-4 along with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) earned the shutout win in goal for Centre. Creger stopped all four of the shots he faced.
The Colonels will return home Saturday, Oct. 14, to host Asbury College. The non-conference match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
