Colonels fall 1-0 to Southwestern
After dropping its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match of the season two days earlier, the Centre College men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Southwestern University, Sunday, Oct. 22, in Georgetown, Texas.
The Colonels, which fell 1-0 to Trinity University Friday night, fall to 10-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC, while Southwestern improves to 9-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league action.
Just like the first half of the Trinity match, the two teams battled through a scoreless first half of play. The Pirates out shot the Colonels 5-1 and had a 1-0 edge in corner kicks in the first period.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Southwestern's John Martinez, off an assist from Lauro Davalos, scored the match's only goal and game-winner.
Southwestern held a slight 10-9 advantage in total shots, while Centre had six corner kicks to only two for the Pirates. Junior Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) took the loss in goal for the Colonels, making two saves on the day.
Centre will return home to play DePauw University, Saturday, Oct. 28. The SCAC match will start at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
