Men's soccer wins sixth straight
For the first time since the 2002 season, the Centre College men's soccer team has started a season 8-1, defeating Sewanee-University of the South 5-2 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match, Friday, Oct. 6, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which have now won four straight matches, improve to 3-0 in the SCAC, while Sewanee falls to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in league play. The win also marks the first time since 2002 Centre has scored five goals or more in back-to-back games. The Colonels defeated Millsaps 5-0 in their previous match.
Sewanee's Patrick Johnson scored the match's first goal putting the Tigers up 1-0. The lead would be short lived as junior Nick Judah (Louisville, Ky.) tied the match at one apiece with his 10th goal of the season in only nine matches. Sophomore Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) notched his fifth assist of the year on the score.
Shortly after the Judah goal, senior Derek Roberts (Knoxville, Tenn.) gave Centre its first lead of the night with his third goal of the season off an assist from Judah.
The Colonels extended its lead in the second half when Roberts scored his second goal of the match off assists from Baumann and junior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.). Junior Matt Kowaleski (Springboro, Ohio) added to the lead scoring his third goal of the season to put Centre ahead 4-1. Junior John Templeton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) recorded his second assist of the season on the score.
After David Scavone scored Sewanee's second goal of the match to pull the Tigers within 4-2, junior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) put Centre back up by three goals when he found the back of the net for his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Jeff Kedrowski (Signal Mountain, Tenn.). It was also Kedrowski's first assist of the year.
Centre controlled much of the match out shooting Sewanee 25-8, including a 14-4 advantage in the second period. The Colonels also owned a 10-4 lead in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) picked up the win in goal for Centre. Creger stopped four of the six shots he faced on the night.
Centre will return to action, Sunday, Oct. 8, when they play host to Oglethorpe University. The SCAC match is set to begin at 12 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
