Centre men blast Principia 5-0
Five different players scored a goal and four others had at least one assist as the Centre College men's soccer team defeated Principia College 5-0 on the second day of the 17th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted by Centre, Sunday, Sept. 10, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels up their record to 3-0 on the season, while Principia falls to 3-3 on the year. The win marks the 17th win in its last 18 matches for Centre in the Classic.
Centre has now registered a shutout in all three matches this season, out scoring its opponents 9-0. The last time the Colonels won their first three matches by shutout was the 2002 season. They also accomplished the feat in 2001. In the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference era, Centre has never posted a shutout win in its first four matches to start a season.
Junior Matt Kowaleski (Springboro, Ohio) opened the scoring with a goal at the 14:32 mark in the first half off an assist from junior Robby Crump (Louisville, Ky.). Just over two minutes later, Crump added another assist on freshman Patrick Hall's (Indianapolis, Ind.) first goal of his Centre career.
The second half would be much of the same as senior Derek Roberts (Knoxville, Tenn.) found the back of the net at the 31:40 mark to give Centre a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist.
With 25:24 remaining to play, senior David Horne (Louisville, Ky.) notched his first goal of the year off a corner kick from senior Kevin Brown (Memphis, Tenn.). Junior Brandon Gish (Ownesboro, Ky.) added the match's final goal, his second in as many days, off an assist from junior Kevin Havelda (Owensboro, Ky.).
The Colonels controlled much of the match having out shot Principia 21-8. Centre also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) earned his third-straight shutout win, stopping all four shots he faced.
The second match of the day saw the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Aurora University battle through regulation and two overtimes only to end in a 2-2 tie.
Centre will next travel to Wilmington, Ohio, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, to participate in the Kiwanis Classic, hosted by Wilmington College. The Colonels will open against Wilmington Friday at 8:00 p.m. and then play Wittenberg College Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
