Scoreless streak ends with 2-1 loss
Opponents had been held scoreless for 532:51 until Wilmington College's Alex Van der Sluijs scored twice in the second half as the Centre College men's soccer team lost 2-1, Friday, Sept. 15, in Wilmington, Ohio.
The match was played as part of the Kiwanis Classic, hosted by Wilmington. The loss was the first of the year for the Colonels as they fall to 3-1 on the season. With the win, the Quakers improve to 4-1.
Just under 14 minutes into the match senior David Horne (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the net for his second goal on the season to give Centre a 1-0 lead. Fellow senior Derek Roberts (Knoxville, Tenn.) notched his third assist on the score.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Centre until the second half. Less than five minutes into the second period Van der Sluijs scored his first goal off an assist from Tobias Brants to tie the match at one apiece and snap Centre's scoreless streak.
Just over two minutes later Van der Sluijs struck again this time off an assist from Daniel Givens for his second score of the contest. The two teams battled throughout the final 38:09, but neither team could score and the match ended in a 2-1 Wilmington win.
The Quakers out shot Centre 14-7 on the night, while the Colonels owned a slight advantage in corner kicks 4-3. Junior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) suffered his first defeat of the season, stopping seven of the nine shots he faced.
Centre will return to action, Saturday, Sept. 16, when they participate in the second day of the Kiwanis Classic. The Colonels are set to play Wittenberg College at 5 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio.
