Men's soccer shuts out Hanover in 3-0 win
The Centre College men's soccer t eam started its 2006 season on a high note, scoring two goals in the first half and another in the second half to shut out Hanover College 3-0, Sunday, Sept. 3, in Danville, Ky.
The win marks the Colonels sixth consecutive season-opening win, with five coming by shutout. It was also Centre's third-straight season-opening win over Hanover (0-2). The Colonels defeated Hanover 2-0 in Hanover, Ind. a year ago and handed the Panthers a 4-1 loss in Danville, Ky. in 2004.
Centre's first goal of the season was scored by junior forward Nick Judah (Louisville, Ky.) at the 25:14 mark. Senior forward Derek Roberts (Knoxville, Tenn.) notched the assist as the Colonels went ahead 1-0.
Later in the first half, it was Roberts doing the scoring, finding the back of the net for his first score if the year with 13:42 on the clock. Sophomore midfielder Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) recorded his first assist on the score.
The score would remain 2-0 until Judah, off an assist from Baumann, scored his second goal of the match for the final 3-0 tally. For Judah, it's the second time in his career, he has scored two goals in a match. He also scored twice October 7, 2005, in an 8-1 win over Millsaps.
The Colonels controlled much of the match having out shot Hanover 15-2, including an 8-0 first half advantage. Junior Chris Creger (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) earned the win in goal for Centre making one save on the night.
The Colonels, now 1-0 on the year, will return to action, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9-10, when they host the 17th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic. Principia College will play Aurora University in Saturday's first match at 5:30 p.m., followed by Centre squaring off against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7:30 p.m.
