Centre, Aurora finish in 1-1 tie in double-overtime
For the first time during the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference era, the Centre College men's soccer team has finished a Bob Allen Classic without winning a match, tying Aurora University 1-1 in double-overtime, Saturday, Sept. 8, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which fell 3-2 in double-overtime to Wilmington College the night before, move to 3-1-1 overall, while Aurora, which defeated Wabash College 2-0 Friday night, moves to 2-0-1.
Aurora jumped on the scoreboard first when Chase Corricelli found the back of the net 20:57 into the first period to put the Spartans ahead 1-0.
The score remained that way until the second half, when senior Nick Judah (Louisville, Ky.) scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick to knot the score at one apiece.
The two teams battled through two overtime periods with neither team able to score. Centre out-shot the Spartans 17-9 for the match and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) stopped six of the seven shots he faced on the evening.
The tie is also the first for the Colonels in the Classic. Centre entered the 18th Annual Bob Allen Classic with a 28-4 record during the SCAC era.
In the earlier match of the day, Wilmington defeated Wabash 3-0 to finish the Classic with a 2-0 record. The Quakers received goals from Robbert Kroeze, Anthony Montgomery and Todd Woolum to improve to 2-2. Wabash fell to 2-3.
The Colonels will next host the Adidas Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15 in Danville, Ky. Emory University and Wittenberg University will square off in the first match of the Invitational at 5 p.m. followed by Centre playing Heidelberg College at 7:30 p.m.
