Crump scores game-winner in overtime for Centre win

In a very emotional night, which saw $5,300 donated in the name of Sue Hauck and Elizabeth Walter to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, senior Robbie Crump (Louisville, Ky.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Senior Night to defeat Austin College 3-2, Saturday, Oct. 27 in  Danville, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels snap a three-match losing streak to improve to 13-4-1 overall and 6-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while Austin, led by Centre graduate and former assistant coach Mark Hudson, falls to 1-14-1 overall and 1-7 in league action.

The Kangaroos struck first as Austin Newman hit the back of the net 13:49 into the first half to put Austin ahead 1-0.

Just under 11 minutes later, the Colonels answered when sophomore James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.) tied the match at one apiece with his third goal of the year at the 24:11 mark in the first half. Senior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist, his seventh of the season.

Fellow sophomore Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind) put Centre ahead when he scored his second goal of the year off a penalty kick with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of Centre for much of the second half, but with 3:10 left to play, Austin's Garrett Evans scored to tie the match at two apiece and force overtime.

Just over five minutes into the overtime period, Crump, who's mother Sue Hauck passed away earlier this fall from breast cancer, hit the game-winner off an assist from junior Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) to give the Colonels their 13th win of the season.

Centre out shot the Kangaroos 20-6 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks on the night. Senior Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) earned the win in goal for the Colonels making two saves in playing the entire match.

"The game played out as I expected," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. "I was happy to see our boys show the character to get the equalizer in the first half and then go up 2-1. Austin's equalizer in the final 2:00 minutes is a credit to their determination."

The goal, which was Crump's first of the season could not have come at a better time and will not be forgotten anytime soon.

"The story of the night is Robbie Crump," Burch said. "He hit the game-winner early in OT to finish the match and I have to believe that his mother was looking down with a smile. This is a truly amazing story, one I will never forget in my life time."

The night was not only successful for Centre, but for many outside the soccer community as the two teams raised $5,300 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest and most progressive grassroots network of survivors and activists working to end breast cancer forever.

Prior to the match, Centre honored its 11 seniors before their final home game and then joined Austin in presenting the check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The Colonels will return to action Saturday, Nov. 3 to play DePauw University in their final regular season match of the year. The SCAC contest is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
