Boyer's goal gives Centre 1-0 win over Birmingham Southern
A first half goal by junior Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) was all the Centre College men's soccer team needed as the Colonels went on to defeat Birmingham Southern College 1-0, Sunday, Oct. 7 in Danville, Ky.
The win marks the seventh straight victory for Centre as the Colonels improve to 10-1-1 overall, while Birmingham Southern falls to 5-7 on the year. The match will no be counted in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) standings as the Panther are in transition to Division III this year.
With just over five minutes to play in the first half and the match scoreless, Boyer notched his second goal of the season and the only score of the match off an assist from sophomore Chris Allen (Louisville, Ky.).
The two teams battled through a scoreless second half the the match ended in a 1-0 win for the Colonels. Centre out shot Birmingham Southern 10-4 on the day, while the Panthers held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) earned the shutout victory stopping all three shots he faced.
Centre head coach Jeb Burch felt the match would be a good test for his team. "We knew how this game would unfold, which helped settle our team mentally. While BSC held all possession in this game, we kept it from amounting to much around our goal.
Burch went on to single out Boyer as a key to the Colonels two wins on the weekend. "Adam Boyer deserves a ton of credit for our two results this weekend. He marshaled the team to two shutout wins and of course the game-winner today against BSC. I was proud of Boyer's effort this weekend."
Centre will return to action, Friday, Oct. 12, when it travels to Sewanee, Tenn. to play Sewanee-The University of the South. The match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 5 p.m. CST.
