Men's Soccer News

In the final match of DePauw University head Coach Page Cotton's 39-year coaching career, the Centre College men's soccer team defeated the Tigers 1-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Saturday, Nov. 3 in Greencastle, Ind.

The Colonels, which entered the match with a 1-6-2 record against the Tigers in the SCAC era, improve to 14-4-1 overall and 7-3 in the SCAC, while DePauw falls to 12-5-1 overall and 7-3 in league action.

The two teams combined for six shots - four by Centre and two by DePauw - in a scoreless first half. The score remained 0-0 through much of the second half, but with 8:51 left to play, senior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) scored the lone goal of the match, his sixth of the season to give the Colonels the 1-0 win.

"I respect our team for being open minded to a system change," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. "Our players were mentally committed to this tactical adjustment and as the game wore on, we gained confidence in what we wanted to do."

Centre out shot the Tigers 10-6 on the night and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.)  earned the shutout win in goal for the Colonels, stopping both shots he faced.

"This was an emotional night," Burch added. "Coach Cotton is a class act and I carry a ton of respect for how his teams play. I feel our players reflected this respect for Depauw and it showed in how hard we worked for this result."

The match also marked the last regular season match for the Colonels' 11 seniors.

"I am going to miss this class, " Burch stated. "I hold them dear to my heart. They have grown up over the past four years at Centre and I am proud of them."

Centre's 14 wins this season mark the most by a Centre men's soccer team since the 2000 season, in which the Colonels won 15 matches. Centre will now wait to see if it is chosen to play in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
