Centre men escape with 2-1 overtime win over Hendrix
Playing in the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game of the season for both programs, the Centre College men's soccer team got two goals from senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.), including the game-winner in overtime to defeat Hendrix College 2-1 in Friday, Sept. 21, in Conway Ark.
The Colonels, which have now won three straight matches, improve to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, while Hendrix falls to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Centre wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Hoskins scored his first goal of the match only 1:59 into the first period to give the Colonels and early 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way into halftime and was still 1-0 for most of the second half. With less than three minutes to play the Warriors' Nick Forsten scored to tie the game at one apiece.
Regulation came to an end and the two teams were forced to play an extra period. The overtime period did not last long as Hoskins scored his second goal of the match and fourth of the season only 1:10 into the third period to give Centre the win. Junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist on the game-winning goal, his third of the year.
Centre out-shot Hendrix 19-9 on the night and held a slim 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) earned the win for the colonels. Creger stopped on shot in the win.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play Rhodes College. The SCAC match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 1 p.m. CST. |
