Colonels blank Mount St. Joseph 4-0 in men's soccer

The Centre College men's soccer team continued with its winning ways in the early going posting a 4-0 shutout in a non-conference game on the road against the College of Mount St. Joseph, Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

With the win, the newly ranked #22 Colonels improve to 3-0 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph, which was playing its first game of the 2007 season, falls to 0-1.

Centre jumped on the scoreboard early, when senior forward Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) scored the match's first goal off a assists from senior midfielder Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) 8:14 into the first period.

With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, senior Joseph Fisher (Cullman, Ala.) tallied his first goal of the 2007 season unassisted to give Centre a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 in favor of the  Colonels until the 58:18 mark in the second half when sophomore Andy Burke (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the back of the net in front of the hometown fans for his first career goal. Senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) had the assist to put Centre ahead 3-0.

With just over 12 minutes left to play, Fisher sealed the win for the Colonels hitting his second goal of the match off a penalty kick for the final 4-0 tally. Junior Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist.

Centre controlled the entire match out-shooting the Lions 28-4, including a 19-2 advantage in the opening period. The Colonels also held a 5-1 advantage in penalty kicks. Senior Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) combined in goal for the shutout.

Centre will return home to host the 18th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8 in Danville, Ky. The first game Friday will feature Aurora University against Wabash College at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Colonels squaring off against Wilmington College at 7:30 p.m.
