#10 Colonels blank Oglethorpe for ninth straight win
For the fourth consecutive match, the #10 Centre College men's soccer team posted a shutout, this time defeating Oglethorpe University 2-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Sunday, Oct. 14, in Atlanta, Ga.
The Colonels, which have not been scored on in the last 420:01, improve to 12-1-1 overall and remain unbeaten in SCAC play at 5-0. Oglethorpe falls to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in league action.
Centre got on the scoreboard 18:15 into the first period when junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) scored his third goal of the season off an assist from senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
The score stayed that way into the second half, but changed very quickly in the second period as Hoskins was on the scoring end this time, netting his team-leading eighth goal of the season only 0:30 in. Sophomore James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist, his third of the year.
The Colonels' defense shut the Stormy Petrals down the rest of the way for Centre's ninth straight win. The Colonels out shot Oglethorpe 18-16 on the day and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) earned the shutout win stopping all three shots he faced.
"I thought Oglethorpe gave us a very good game today," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. "Our second goal came in the opening minute of the second half which was a relief because we knew Oglethorpe was going to push hard for the equalizer."
Burch went on to add "Our defense is getting shutouts and Adam Boyer, John Templeton, Joseph Fisher, James Kusak, Chris Allen, and Chris Creger couldn't be playing better at this time of the year."
Centre will next travel to Georgetown, Texas to play Southwestern University. The SCAC match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 4 p.m. CST. |
