Men's Soccer News Centre knocks off #21 Ohio Northern for season-opening win For the seventh consecutive season, the Centre College men's soccer team opened its season with a win, this time knocking off #21 Ohio Northern University 4-3, Friday, Aug. 31, in Danville, Ky. The Colonels quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead as senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) scored Centre's first goal of the year less than five minutes into the match. Senior Nick Judah (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist on the goal, his first of two on the night. The score remained 1-0 until senior forward Brandon Gish (Ownesboro, Ky.) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.) with 9:13 left in the first period. Gish was not done. Less than three minutes later, the senior found the back of the net for the second time off an assist from Judah to give the Colonels a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Polar Bears (0-1) came out in the second half looking to close the gap. Just under 10 minutes into the period, Zach Huffman put Ohio Northern on the board, cutting the lead to 3-1. Ben Jackson has the assist on the score.
With 21:07 on the clock, the Polar Bears' Adam Ross pulled Ohio Northern within one with his first goal of the 2007 season off an assist from Dan Otanicar. Leading by only one, Centre responded at the 10:35 mark when junior Eric Brown (Georgetown, Tenn.) netted his first goal of the season off an assist from fellow junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) to put the Colonels ahead 4-2.
Ohio Northern scored once more on a goal by Otanicar with 4:25 left to play, but the Polar Bears would run out of time and fall 4-3 to Centre. Jackson tallied his second assist on the goal. The Colonels out-shot Ohio Northern 12-8 on the night, while the Polar Bears held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) picked up the win for Centre. Creger made four saves on the night. The Colonels, now 1-0, will travel to Hanover, Ind. Sunday, Aug. 31 to play the Hanover College Panthers. The match is set to start at 4 p.m. |
