Men's Soccer News

Trailing 4-1, Rhodes College rallied to score two goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Centre College men's soccer team held on for a 4-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) win Sunday, Sept. 23, in Memphis, Tenn.

The Colonels, which opened its conference season Friday, Sept. 21 with a 2-1 overtime win over Hendrix, have now won four straight to improve to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC. Rhodes falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in league action.

The Lynx opened the scoring as Patrick Deveau scored the first goal of the match 15:27 into the first period to give Rhodes a 1-0 lead.

Centre then scored four unanswered goals, with two coming in the first half and two in the second. Senior Brandon Gish (Owensboro, Ky.) scored off an assist from senior Ed Ohin (Louisville, Ky.) at the 19:53 mark to tie the match at one apiece.

Just under 12 minutes later, sophomore James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.) gave the Colonels their first lead of the match with his second goal of the year on a penalty kick.

Ahead 2-1 going into the second half, senior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) extended the lead with his first goal of the year. Fellow senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) had the assist.

Less than three minutes later, Hoskins scored one himself, taking an assist from Corbett for his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give Centre a 4-1 lead.

The Lynx rallied as Logan Eberly scored twice with Chase LaFont assisting on both goals, but the Colonels would end the rally and the match with a 4-3 win on the road.

Rhodes out shot Centre 14-12 on the day while the Colonels held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) picked up the win stopping five shots.

The Colonels will step out of conference play Friday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Maryville, Tenn. to play Maryville College. The non-conference match is set to start at 7 p.m.
