Four second half goals propel Centre men to 5-0 win
The #10 Centre College men's soccer team continued its strong play scoring four goals in the second half to defeat Sewanee-University of the South 5-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Friday, Oct. 12 in Sewanee, Tenn.
The Colonels, which have now won eight straight matches, improve to 11-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the SCAC, while Sewanee falls to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in league action.
Just under eight minutes into the first period, senior Joseph Fisher (Cullman, Ala.) scored his third goal of the year off assists from senior Nick Judah (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.).
The score remained 1-0 through halftime, but changed quickly in the second half as Judah hit the back of the net only 1:23 into the second period to put Centre ahead 2-0. Junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist.
Less than three minutes later, senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) scored his seventh goal of the year off an assist from junior Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) for a 3-0 Centre lead.
Judah added his second goal of the match and sixth of the season at the 55:05 mark and senior Brandon Gish (Owensboro, Ky.) added his fourth goal of the year for the final 5-0 tally. Senior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) assisted on Judah's second goal while Baumann added another assist on the Gish goal.
Centre out shot the Tigers 21-11 and both teams had four corner kicks each. Senior Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) recorded the shutout win in goal for the Colonels making five saves in the win.
"Our ball movement was exceptional and we showed tremendous skill at times," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "I was happy to see Judah back on the scorer's sheet. Overall though, tonight was a team effort. Everyone contributed to the result and Centre showed class throughout the match."
Centre will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 14 against Oglethorpe University. The SCAC match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will be begin at 2 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
