Southwestern hands Centre men first SCAC loss

A goal with just under six minutes to play in the second half turned out to be the game-winner as the Centre College men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Southwestern University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match Friday, Oct. 19, in Georgetown, Texas.

The loss drops the 10th-ranked Colonels to 12-2-1 overall and 5-1 in the SCAC, while Southwestern improves to 9-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. The loss also ends a 10-match unbeaten streak by Centre and is the first loss since September 7.

The Pirates' Kyle Strine scored the match's first goal 30:56 into the first period to put Southwestern ahead 1-0. Scott Smith was credited with an assist on the goal.

Just over nine minutes later, Centre evened the match at one apiece when junior Eric Brown (Georgetown, Tenn.) scored his second goal of the season at the 39:05 mark.

The score remained tied into half time and for most of the second half, but with 84:10 on the clock Strine struck again scoring his second goal of the match, the game-winner, to give Southwestern the 2-1 win. Nathan Shaw-Meadow had the assist as the Pirates won for the third time in its last four matches.

The Colonels out shot Southwestern 12-9, while both teams tallied five corner kicks each. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) suffered the loss making five saves on the day.

"This is a very tough loss for us," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. "Southwestern's game winner came in the final 6:00 minutes and was their lone dangerous opportunity of the half. Our team has worked hard all year though and our boy's have the character to bounce back Sunday."

Next up for the Colonels is another important SCAC match against Trinity University, the top ranked team in the country, Sunday, Oct. 21. The match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is slated to start at 1 p.m. CST in San Antonio, Texas.
