Wilmington rallies to defeat Centre men in double-overtime

Leading 2-0 only 10 minutes into the match, the #22 Centre College men's soccer team allowed two goals in regulation to tie the match and another in the second overtime to fall 3-2 to Wilmington College, Friday, Sept. 8, in Danville, Ky. The match was played as part of the 18th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic.

The loss is the first of the season for the Colonels, who fall to 3-1. The win is the first of the year for Wilmington, which improves to 1-2. The loss is only the second defeat for the Colonels in the last 17 matches played in the Bob Allen Classic. The other loss came to the University of Chicago 1-0, also in double-overtime.

Centre wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard as senior Ed Ohin (Louisville, Ky.) scored his first goal of the season 7:17 into the first period. Fellow senior Brandon Gish (Georgetown, Tenn.) had the assist, also his first of the year.

Just under three minutes later, junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the net for his first goal of 2007 to give Centre an early 2-0 lead. Senior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) picked up assists on the goal.

Wilmington then began to chip away. With just under 30 minutes left in the first half, Nick Kinder put the Quakers on the board off an assist from Emil Nordstrom to cut the Colonel lead in half at 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 until the 81:43 mark in the second half when Anthony Montgomery tied the match at two apiece. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie and the two teams went to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Kinder struck again hitting the back net for the game-winner at the 117:53 mark to give the Quakers their first win of the year.

The Colonels out-shot Wilmington 12-10 and held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks, but came up short on the scoreboard. Senior goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) suffered the loss making six saves on the night.

The earlier match of the night pitted Aurora University against Wabash College. Aurora scored a goal in each half and played solid defensively to post a 2-0 shutout victory.

All four teams will return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 for the second day of the Classic. Wilmington will face Wabash in the day's first match at 5:30 p.m. followed by Centre and Aurora squaring off at 7:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
