Men's soccer posts second straight shutout win
After posting a 1-0 shutout against Heidelberg College on the first night of the Adidas Classic, the Centre College men's soccer team recorded another shutout on the second day, this time a 2-0 win over Wittenberg University, Saturday, Sept. 15 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which have not won three matches by shutout, improve to 5-1-1 overall, while Wittenberg, which fell to Emory University 2-1 in overtime the night before, falls to 4-2-1 on the year.
Centre jumped on the scoreboard quickly as senior Nick Judah (Louisville, Ky.) netted his third goal of the season only 1:40 into the first period. Senior Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) and junior Chris Baumann (Louisville, Ky.) picked up an assist each on the score.
The two teams battled back and forth the remainder of the first half and most of the second half with neither team able to score. Near the end of the second half, Wittenberg was awarded a penalty kick.
With the opportunity to tie the match at one apiece, Centre goalkeeper Chris Creger (Charleston, S.C.) made a great save and the match remained 1-0 in favor of the Colonels.
Centre then proceeded to move the ball down field and with less than four minutes to play, senior Matt Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) scored his first goal of the season to seal the win for the Colonels. Seniors Brandon Gish (Owensboro, Ky.) and Robbie Crump (Louisville, Ky.) had an assist each.
Wittenberg owned a slight edge in shots (13-11), while Centre tallied more corner kicks (7-3) on the night. Creger earned his second straight shutout win stopping all seven shots he faced.
In the earlier match of the evening, Emory won its second straight match of the Classic, defeating Heidelberg 3-0.
The Colonels will next travel to Conway, Ark. to open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play against Hendrix College. The match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 8 p.m. CST. |
