Colonels stay active in summer off-season

There are more Centre soccer players playing in organized leagues this summer than ever before. The Colonels are represented in nearly all levels of competition across the country including the USL, PDL, USASA, and USYSA.

Centre graduate and now assistant coach Dave Horne (Louisville, Ky.) is playing professionally for the USL-2 Cincinnati Kings. Horne is coming off the bench to play center-midfielder for the Kings, and recently scored his first professional goal sparking a tie that would qualify his team for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Senior Chris Creger, (Charleston, S.C.), fresh from his recent study abroad experience in Cyprus and Greece, is the starting keeper for the PDL Fredericksburg Gunners. Creger has given up just two goals in four games as a starter while recording 28 saves.

Four players from Louisville are playing for the USASA Louisville Soccer Alliance. Seniors Nick Judah and Matt Corbett have joined fellow Louisvillian juniors Adam Boyer and Chris Baumann to pace the team. All four Centre starters have been major contributors to the success of the former national championship squad that stands with a 4-1 record.

The Colonels from LSA recently had the opportunity to compete against Centre seniors John Templeton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Matt Hoskins (Lexington, Ky.) who both play for the USASA Lexington Wanderers. The Kentucky teams met in the Warrior Classic regional tournament in Dayton, OH. LSA won the bragging rights with the 2-0 victory.

In Ohio, junior Matt Kowaleski (Dayton, Ohio) and sophomore Andy Burke (Cincinnati, Ohio) are playing for the U-23 Cincinnati 1790 of the USL Super 20 League. In Indiana, sophomore Richard Hinton (Fort Wayne, Ind.) has joined the Fort Wayne U-23 men’s team and sophomore Pat Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) is playing for the U-23 Dynamo. Finally, our sophomores have been active in their final year of eligibility to play in the USYSA. Lexington natives PJ Gagnon and Andy Howard play for Lexington FC and recently competed against Javanon and James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.) in the state cup final. Javanon pulled away with a 2-0 win for the championship and an opportunity to play in the in the USYSA Region II tournament later this month.
