Men's soccer team falls 2-1 in overtime to Millsaps
Two days after defeating Birmingham Southern College, the Centre College men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision in overtime to Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Sunday, Oct. 5, in Jackson, Miss.
The Colonels, which hadn't lost to the Majors since September 14, 1996, fall to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC, while Millsaps improves to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The Majors scored both of their goals, including the game-winner in overtime, off penalty kicks. Anthony Amaya scored both goals, with the first coming at the 42:21 mark in the first half and the second 0:17 into overtime.
Centre's goal was scored by senior Adam Boyer (Louisville, Ky.) at the 76:07 mark in the second half. Junior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) had the assist on the score.
"This was an odd game," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. "Anytime a penalty is called, there is going to be some controversy; especially when two pk's are called; moreover,in sudden goal overtime. Honestly, our goal was illegal as the official allowed the set piece to occur inside the six-yard box, but it was that type of game today," Burch added. The Colonels out-shot Millsaps 14-9 on the day and held a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) suffered the loss for Centre. Arndt stopped four shots in the defeat.
"In the end, we need to look at ourselves and try to get better," Burch finished. Next up for the Colonels is another SCAC match against Rhodes College Friday, Oct. 10. The conference contest is slated to start at 8 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
