Colonels open SCAC play with 1-0 win over Oglethorpe

For the fourth consecutive year, the Centre College men's soccer team has opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) season with a win, this time defeating Oglethorpe University 1-0 Friday, Sept. 19, in Danville, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, while Oglethorpe falls to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Following a scoreless first half, which featured only four shots total; two by each team, the Centre offense created more opportunities in the second half registering 13 shots to only two for the Stormy Petrals.

The match remained scoreless until the 75:25 mark when junior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) hit the back of the net off an assist by senior Jeff Kedrowski (Chattanooga, Tenn.) for the game-winner.

"What a goal, class all the way with the back heel and finish," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. "Kedro gets a lot of credit for playing that and I was very happy to see Hinton score. He needed that goal," Burch continued.

The Colonels out shot Oglethorpe 15-4 on the evening and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) played well for Centre in goal stopping all three shots he faced for the shutout win.

"OU will present problems to the rest of our conference. As an away side, they defused the game with their possession and neither side had much to say around the goal. I thought we adjusted at halftime and our kids kicked the game up in intensity," Burch commented.

"I felt we were in good control the second half and deserved the win. Arndt played great in goal tonight as well and I felt we looked solid through and through in this game," Burch finished.

Centre will return to action Sunday, Sept. 21 to host Sewanee-University of the South in a men's/women's SCAC doubleheader. The match is set to start at noon in Danville, Ky.
