Men's soccer team downs Austin 3-1
After the two teams raised money for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure, the Centre College men's soccer team defeated Austin College 3-1 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) contest, Friday, Oct. 2 in Danville, Ky.
The win ups the Colonels overall record to 8-3-1 and SCAC mark to 2-1, while the Kangaroos from Austin fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Freshman Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) put Centre on the scoreboard first hitting the back of the net in the first period for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the second half off an assist from sophomore Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Following a goal by Austin's Chris Stein, Hall found the back of the net with a shot to cap the scoring and seal the win for Centre. Garvey added an assist on the score.
The Colonels out-shot Austin 13-2 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) earned the win in goal for Centre making one save in the win.
"I thought Ryan Garvey was dangerous all night and Van Nevel is on a real hot streak," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"We looked dangerous all night and our team defense is finally starting to show itself," Burch finished.
The two teams made a friendly wager prior to the match for a good cause as part of their annually scheduled conference match-up. The Susan G. Komen For the Cure is the largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures for breast cancer.
The two teams raised a total of $7,757.48, the most ever in the three years the game has taken place, with Austin raising more money to win the wager.
Centre will return to action Sunday, Oct. 4 with another SCAC match against Colorado College. The match is set to start at noon in Danville, Ky. |
