Overtime goal lifts Centre men to 5-4 win over Berry
The Centre College offense continues to find the back of the net scoring five more goals, including the game-winner in double-overtime to defeat Berry College 5-4 in the 20th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic, Saturday, Sept. 12 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels won the Classic and have now won four straight matches to improve to 4-2, while Berry falls to 2-1-1.
Senior James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.) scored the first two goals of the match to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead, with the second coming at the 17:34 mark.
Berry was awarded a penalty kick only four seconds later and Luis Salazar hit the back of the net to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Senior Chris Allen (Louisville, Ky.) added to Centre's lead with a goal at the 19:10 mark, but Berry scored the next two goals to tie the match at three apiece.
With just under six minutes to play in the second half, senior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) scored to give Centre a 4-3 lead, but Salazar would score his third goal of the night and second on a penalty kick with 2:07 left in regulation to re-tie the match.
After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to double-overtime where sophomore Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) hit the back of the net on a penalty kick to give the Colonels the win.
Senior Andy Burke (Cincinnati, Ohio), freshman Will Frentz (Louisville, Ky.) and Hinton each had an assist in the win as the two teams had 16 shots and six corner kicks each. Senior goalkeeper Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) earned the win stopping six shots in goal.
"We love to give away the house in goals, which I don't get," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"But you have to credit our offense. We put 11 goals on two very good teams in this Classic," Burch finished.
Kusak and Arndt were named the Classic's Co-Most Valuable Players. Chris Allen was named the top defensive player and Salazar was named the top offensive player.
Next up is a home match against Hanover College Tuesday, Sept. 15. Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
