Centre men's soccer comes from behind to beat Colorado College 3-2

Centre made a terrific comeback after being down 2-0 early in the first half to beat Colorado College 3-2 Sunday, October 4 in Danville, Ky. The Colonels move to 9-3-1 on the season and 3-1 in the SCAC.

Colorado College came out with the intensity picking up two early goals in the first half. Brendan Douglas scored the first goal on a header that was crossed over to him from Jordan Reese 13:54 into the game.

The second goal by Colorado College was similar to the first goal as Brendan Douglas headed the ball in off a cross again from Jordan Reese this time with 19:35 on the clock.

Centre wouldn't give up, making a tremendous comeback. Sophomore Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) put Centre on the board scoring on a header 24:49 into the game off as assist from senior James Kusak (Louisville, Ky.).

The Colonels would score one more time before the half ended as freshman Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) put the ball in the back of the net with about nine minutes to go in the first half. Senior Harry Gerard (Haiti) was credited with the assist as he kicked the ball up to Settle and Settle headed the ball in to tie the game at two apiece.

Centre came out dominating the beginning of the second half after making the comeback at the end of the first half. Hall would put the Colonels up 3-2 at the 60:40 mark by pushing the ball past the Colorado College goalie after receiving the ball from sophomore Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) who would record the assist.

The rest of the game remained very physical as both teams continued to apply pressure on the offensive end, but neither team was able to score again.

Centre ended the game with 16 shots on goal while Colorado College had 10 shots. The Colonels dominated on corner kick attempts with nine, while Colorado only had four opportunities.

"We are very fortunate to have a player like (Alex) Wegener (Columbia, Mo.)," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.

"His leadership today was important and drove us to win. Colorado is a very good team and once we were down a man, I thought my kids took a stand and weathered a tough situation. Credit to Jackson who made a crucial save with five seconds left to preserve the win," Burch finished.

Centre takes on SCAC rival Rhodes College next on Friday, Oct. 9. The match will take place in Memphis, Tenn. and game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
