Men's soccer downs Illinois Wesleyan 2-1
One day after a double-overtime 1-1 tie against the University of Chicago, the Centre College men's soccer team defeated Illinois Wesleyan University 2-1 in a non-conference match Saturday, Sept. 19 in Bloomington, Ill.
The Colonels, now 6-2-1 overall are unbeaten in their last six matches, while Illinois Wesleyan drops to 3-2-2 on the year.
Sophomore Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) opened the scoring 9:30 into the first half with a goal off an assist from fellow sophomore Cameron Bayse (Louisville, Ky.).
Just over five minutes into the second half, Centre added to the lead when freshman Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Aldyn Royes (Norcross, Ga.).
Illinois Wesleyan scored a goal at the 84:28 mark from Tim Griffin, but would get no more as the match would end in a 2-1 win for Centre.
The Colonels out-shot Illinois Wesleyan 12-8, while the Titans had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior J.C. Spalding (New Haven, Ky.) earned the win in goal for Centre. Spalding made two saves in the win.
"J.C. stepped up in goal for us and did what good keepers do and won us the game," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"His first half save to keep it 1-0 was important. I am upset we missed the PK to go 3-0, but overall, we had a gut check today and stepped up," Burch finished. Centre will next open conference play when the Colonels travel to Atlanta, Ga. Friday, Sept. 25 to play Oglethorpe University. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match is set to start at 2 p.m. |
