Colonels fall 3-2 in overtime to Kenyon
After dropping its season-opener by a goal, the Centre College men's soccer team lost another one-goal match, this time falling 3-2 in overtime to Kenyon College at the Glenn Hyundai College Showcase hosted by Transylvania University Saturday, Sept. 5 in Lexington, Ky.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 0-2 on the season for the first time in the SCAC era, while Kenyon improves to 2-0 to start the year.
Alex Knauss opened the scoring finding the back of the net off an assist from Felix Hoffman at the 32:23 mark in the first period to give Kenyon a 1-0 lead.
Jeremy Fischer pushed that lead to 2-0 after he scored off an assist from Jon Myers early in the second half.
Centre freshman Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) cut the lead to 2-1 after he notched his first career goal and the first of the season for the Colonels at the 62:05 mark. Seniors Alex Wegener and Patrick Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) recorded assists.
Just 1:22 second later, senior Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) tied the game at two apiece on a penalty kick with his first career goal. Senior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) was credited with an assist.
The two teams finished regulation tied and went into overtime where Russ Miller gave Kenyon the 3-2 win with a goal 3:50 into the extra period.
Centre was out-shot 13-6 on the day, while both teams had five corner kicks each. Senior goalkeeper J.C. Spalding (New Haven, Ky.) suffered the loss in goal for the Colonels. Spalding allowed the game-winning goal and stopped two shots after entering the match early in the second half. Centre will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 6 against Wittenberg University on day two of the Showcase. Start time is set for 3 p.m. in Lexington, Ky. |
