Centre opens league play with 3-1 win over Oglethorpe
For the fifth straight season, the Centre College men's soccer team has won it's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)-opening match, defeating Oglethorpe University 3-1 Friday, Sept. 25 in Atlanta, Ga.
With the win, the Colonels remain unbeaten in their last eight matches and improve to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC. Oglethorpe falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Centre struck first when sophomore Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the net 26:22 into the first period to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
Oglethorpe knotted the match at one at the end of the first half when Bryan Burnick scored off an assist from Aaron Walker.
With the score tied at one, freshman Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) broke the tie with a goal at the 62:45 mark off an assist from senior Patrick Garvey (Louisville, Ky.).
Freshman Austin Greer (Bowling Green, Ky.) then scored the final goal with just under five minutes left to seal the win for the Colonels.
Centre out-shot the Stormy Petrals 13-6 and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Seniors Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) and J.C. Spalding (New Haven, Ky.) combined for the win in goal.
"We used every player in this game and I though we maintained a consistent focused effort for 90 minutes," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
Kusak and Wegener were exceptional and we looked in control all game. Oglethorpe is a good team, but I credit the individual effort of Van Nevel, Ryan Garvey and Greer. They earned their goals today," Burch finished.
Centre will next travel to Sewanee, Tenn. to play Sewanee-The University of the South Sunday, Sept. 27. The SCAC match is set to start at 12 p.m. CDT |
