Centre falls 2-1 in SCAC game against Sewanee
The Centre men's soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 loss to conference foe Sewanee on Sunday, Sept. 27 in Sewanee, Tenn. Centre was coming into the game on Sunday hoping to pick up their second straight conference win after recording their first one two days earlier.
Centre didn't take long to go up 1-0 on Sewanee with a goal by sophomore Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) 11 seconds into the match. Van Nevel's goal is the sixth fastest goal ever scored in Division III men's soccer.
Sewanee tied the game with 12:30 on the clock when Matt Lightfoot was able to find the back of the net.
Neither team would score for the remaining 32:30 of the first half.
Centre dominated the second half with 10 shots on goal versus Sewanee's three, but Sewanee was able to get one of those three shots to go in for the winning goal. Stuart Maxey scored the Tigers second goal with 3:58 left in the game to give Sewanee the 2-1 victory.
The Colonels had fifteen total shots on goal and four corner kicks. Freshman Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) led Centre with four shots.
Next up is a home match against Austin College on Friday, Oct. 3. Start time is set for 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky. The Centre vs. Austin game will mark the third year of the Komen Game, which the two teams raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. |
