Centre ties University of Chicago 1-1
The Centre men's soccer team held their ground Friday, Sept. 18 when they took on the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill. The match ended with a 1-1 tie after playing two overtime periods.
Centre took an early lead over the Maroons when sophomore Tony Distler (Louisville, Ky.) scored his first goal of the season 6:19 into the first half.
The University of Chicago didn't take long to answer when Stanton Coville scored 8:35 in the first half on an assist from Garrett Laird.
After the two early goals the defense took over as neither team scored for the rest of regulation time and even after two overtime periods.
The Maroons out shot the Colonels 12-7 and each team had five corner kicks. Goalie Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) had six saves for the Colonels in 110 minutes of play. Chris Giusto also had six saves for the University of Chicago.
"Distler was excellent tonight and I was happy with our ability to adjust in overtime," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"We looked good enough to win it in OT with several dangerous chances. Chicago is a very good team though and they fought hard. I am not surprised to see a draw considering this match featured an SCAC vs. a UAA team," Burch finished.
Next for the Colonels is Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 4:00 p.m. in Bloomington, Ill. |
