Six second half goals propel Centre men to win
Down 1-0 at the half, the Centre College men's soccer team got six goals from six different guys to defeat Wilmington College 6-3 on day one of the 20th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic Friday, Sept. 11 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels have now won three straight matches to improve to 3-2, while Wilmington falls to 3-2.
The Quakers Michael Kiszkiel scored with only four seconds left in the first half off an assist by Ross Evers for a 1-0 lead.
That lead was short-lived as Centre senior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) scored the Colonels first goal of the match at the 50:45 mark off assists from senior Chris Allen (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Aldyn Royes (Norcross, Ga.)..
The second and third goals for Centre came on own goals. Senior goalkeeper Aaron Arndt (Madisonville, Ky.) caught the Wilmington defense out of position and hit a 90-yard ball that hit a Wilmington defender and the keeper misjudged for the third goal and a 3-1 Centre lead.
Following the Quaker's second goal, the Colonels scored three unanswered goals from sophomore Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) and freshmen Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) and Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) to take a 6-2 lead.
Wilmington scored a late goal to cut the lead in half, but it was not enough as Centre finished the match for its third win of the season.
The Colonels out-shot the Quakers 21-6, while both teams had six corner kicks each. Arndt earned the win in goal for Centre.
"As a program, we have a great deal of respect for Wilmington," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"While the goal at the half-time whistle was very controversial, it really motivated our team. The combination of respect and being down 1-0 drove us to go out and win. When two great programs meet like this I would never expect nine goals, but crazy things happen in soccer. I am just proud my kids had the heart to take the game," Burch finished.
Centre will return Saturday, Sept. 12 for day two of the Classic. The Colonels will play Berry College at 7:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
