Centre men rally to defeat Wittenberg 2-1
Trailing 1-0 into the second half, the Centre College men's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half and earned its first win of the season defeating Wittenberg University 2-1 Sunday, Sept. 6, in Lexington, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-2, while Wittenberg falls to 0-3. The match was played as part of the Glenn Hyundai College Showcase hosted by Transylvania University.
The Tigers' Spencer Hogue opened the scoring with a goal 16:45 into the first period off an assist from Stefan Latham to give Wittenberg a 1-0 lead.
Almost twenty minutes into the second half, Centre broke through as senior Chris Allen (Louisville, Ky.) scored off a corner kick to tie the match at one apiece. Senior Patrick Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) had the assist.
With just under six minutes to play, senior Richard Hinton (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) scored the game-winner on a penalty kick to give the Colonels their first win of the 2009 season. Senior Patrick Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) notched the assist.
Centre out-shot Wittenberg 13-4 on the day and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) got his first start of the season in goal and earned his first win stopping one shot. The Colonels will look for their second win Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they host the College of Mount St. Joseph. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
