Memorable Moment:
In 1990, Centre College hosted conference rival Sewanee in a decisive game for the conference championship. This was the second year of the Brian Chafin Era as head coach. With less than two minutes left on the clock and the score tied 1-1, a penalty kick was called on Sewanee. Carlton stepped up to take the PK and he hit the left post, no goal. The game went into overtime where Centre ended up losing 2-1 to Sewanee.
Forward to 1991, Carlton's senior year, and the game against Sewanee was to be played at Mont Eagle, Tenn. In one of the most focused manners ever seen, Carlton entered the team huddle and made it very clear to the group that he wanted the ball. The Centre team sat back as Carlton hat tricked in the opening 25 minutes of the game. Shier was not going to be stopped, he consistently beat two and three players throughout the match. It was an inspired performance that is still remembered today among Centre Soccer Alumni.
Carlton Shier will be inducted into the Centre College Hall of Fame on October 15, 2005 as part of Homecoming. Centre will host Sewanee this same day
at 1:30 p.m.
