Coaches Corner
"The Next Five Years..."
Tuesday night, January 16, 2007 was the night Mark and I said good bye to one another. He embarked on the long drive to Sherman, Texas and Austin College early Wednesday morning.
I have to say, it was an emotional good bye. Mark has been a fantastic friend and assistant coach to me. He has left behind some amazing shoes, a high standard, for our next assistant coach. As of today though, I am confident in how our search is going and a new assistant coach should be in office fairly soon.
For me, Hudson’s departure marks the end of an era and the start to another five years. In the past five years, Centre College Men’s Soccer has put up some impressive numbers. Just take a look:
• 72% Winning Percentage for all games
• 26 Players named All – SCAC
• 13 NSCAA Regonal All – Americans
• 3 NSCAA All – Americans
• Assistant Coach promoted to Head Coach within the SCAC
• Set the NCAA Record for fastest back to back goals scored by the same team, all divisions
• Nationally ranked 3 of 5 years including Centre’s first ever national top ten
• The only team to beat Trinity in the conference
Few who know me will understand that the work has only begun. Currently, our team is learning the demands and expectations of continuing this tradition.
Young people tend to struggle in seeing the big picture. I remind our players that we have a massive responsibility to everyone associated with this program. Over a quarter century of soccer alumni have built a program that is a pillar of SCAC soccer. It is their turn to set the standards of hard work and dedication.
Our history is very important.
This is a pivotal year for men’s soccer. Our current team is responsible for taking the first new steps into the next five years.
I believe the upcoming seasons will become defining moments in our history as we push to win NCAA Tournaments. We are built for tournament play. Our team defense is the water mark in the conference and I feel we can score goals. This is everything in tournament play and as we understand, Centre is not a team anyone in this country wants to face in a single elimination tournament.
One last thing, our Alumni Weekend this spring will be Saturday, April 21. This will coincide with our Women’s Soccer Program as we will host two games. It should be a fun weekend for both our Men and Women’s alumni group to come back to campus and play against our varsity teams. So mark your calendars and keep in touch.
