Coach's Corner
"Preseason" I was excited to see the entire team pass their fitness tests this year except one player. This reflects a level of commitment by the group that is promising. Our September schedule will more than prepare us for conference play in October. We need this though as a strong in region schedule serves as a Plan B if we don’t win the conference.
We will face five NCAA Tournament Teams from 2006. Centre has finished #1 in team defense in the SCAC for the past two years. I will again depend on a veteran defense to position the team for another conference run. Offensively, we will score plenty of goals, but our team defense is what will allow us to win the conference. David and I decided to take the boy’s off campus Wednesday, Aug. 22, and visit an old friend of mine’s farm. It turned out to be a good day for the boys to come closer as a unit. As David put it, “it wasn’t forced.” The environment was relaxed and the boy’s had fun. We had the team do a series of technical touch tests followed immediately by a grueling two-mile run up a knob. It helped that the run was completely in the shade. Moreover, we had a two-acre lake for the boys to cool off in before we repeated the series again. I decided to purchase a pig and my friend spent about 12 hours putting together a feast for the team. We included a few team activities as well, simply put, our team can’t sing and our freshmen look funny with fake mustaches. It has been a hot preseason as Danville has officially experienced the hottest August on record. We are dealing with 100+ degree temperatures. But the boys seem to be in good spirits, although they are approaching that time when they are sick of playing one another and want a real game. We open with a stern test with #21 Ohio Northern University on August 31st at 7:30 pm in Danville. We return home for the 18th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic on September 7-8, playing at 7:30 p.m. each night with Wilmington and Aurora. I hope to see many of you at our first three matches of the year. They are very tough tests, so your support will be needed.
