Sewanee defeats Centre women 3-1
After defeating Millsaps College 3-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match, Sunday, Oct. 1, in Jackson, Miss., the Centre College women's soccer team is off to its best start in school history after nine matches.
The win gives the Colonels an 8-1 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the SCAC, while Millsaps falls to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in league action. Centre previously began two different seasons (1996 & 2005) with a 7-1 record, but then lost its next match both years.
Sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) netted the match's first goal, here ninth of the season, 18:00 into the first period to put the Colonels ahead 1-0.
Menard then assisted freshman Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.) on her second goal of the season to give Centre a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Sophomore Morgan Taylor (Richmond, Va.) added the final goal for the Colonels, her first of the season, with only one minute to play in the match.
Centre controlled much of the match out shooting the Majors 22-5 for the match, including a 15-3 advantage in the second half. The Colonels also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned her fourth shutout win of the season. McAuley made one save in the win.
The Colonels will return home, Friday, Oct. 6, to play Sewanee-University of the South. The match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
