Centre women pound Berea for 9-0 win

Scoring the most goals in a match since the 1998 season, the Centre College women's soccer team defeated Berea College 9-0 in a non-conference match, Friday, Oct. 13, in Danville, Ky.

The win gives Centre 10 wins on the year to only three losses, marking the second straight season the Colonels have posted 10 or more wins. The last time Centre had back-to-back 10 or more win seasons was 1997-1998.

Eight different players registered at least one point for Centre, led by sophomore Erin Menard's (LaGrange, Ky.) fifth hat trick of her career. Menard scored once in the first half and twice in the second period for her fourth multi-goal match of the season.

Senior Clay McCollum (Prospect, Ky.) also had a big night scoring her third goal of the year and assisting on three more. Freshman Cindy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.) netted her third goal and added an assist.

Sophomore Casey Yeakel (Prospect, Ky.) and freshmen Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.), Katie Kerr (Canyon County, Calif.) and Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.) also scored a goal each. Yeakel also notched an assist and sophomore Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) tallied two assists in the win.

Centre dominated the entire match out shooting Berea 35-2 on the night while owning a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Freshmen Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) and Jessica Moreman (Elizabethtown, Ky.) stopped one shot each to combine for the shutout in goal for the Centre.

The Colonels' nine goals in the match are the most a Centre women's soccer team has scored since October 11, 1998, when they defeated Millsaps College 11-0 in Jackson, Miss.

Centre will return to action, Sunday, Oct. 15, when it travels to Hanover, Ind. to make up a match against Hanover College that was previously postponed earlier in the season due to the weather. The non-conference match will start at 2 p.m.
