The Countdown Begins

June 16, 2006

By: Jessica Chisley
Assistant Coach

It is now the middle of June and already the coaching staff is preparing for the upcoming season! Let's be honest, how can we not be excited about the upcoming season?! We are two weeks away from our 9th Annual Girl's Soccer Camp where 360 girls will enjoy the opportunity to stay and learn about the game we love at Centre College. The World Cup is in full swing and anybody who loves soccer is parked in front of a television from 9:00 to 5:00 cheering for various teams around the world. Go US! Finally, we are also approximately two months away from the opening days of preseason! With so much going on around us, we can't help but to catch the bug of excitement.

This year we welcome players from five states: California, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia. In addition, we also welcome two transfers. Kate Anderson is a standout player from Louisville who played at Sacred Heart Academy and Javanon. Next we have Hilton Head Island native, Lizzie Hubbard a Division I transfer from Georgia Southern. With this year's recruiting class, the composition of the team is now comprised of 53% in-state players and 47% out-of-state players. With the addition the '05 recruiting class and now the '06 recruiting class, the Centre Women's Soccer program has state representation from: California, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. It is certainly encouraging and exciting to welcome players from so many different parts of the country. In addition to the diversity of state representation, we now have representation from 19 different soccer clubs across the US. We feel that the chemistry and balance of both in state and out of state players will most likely create a very unique style of play.

The coaching staff could not be happier about this type of composition because of the diversity of playing styles each player brings to the program. State-wide, each region has a style of play that is unique unto itself. Bringing these players together, we hope, is sure to make the 2006 season yet another stand-out year. Last year, there was an uncertainly with such a young team and the capabilities the team had. This season we will still be very young; however, expectations will be set extremely high and hopefully this year's team will be rewarded for their hard efforts and passion.

As you can see, the face of Centre Women's Soccer is changing. Last year was a banner season of firsts, yet, we are hungry for even more. The stage has been set and the competition is even more challenging. This season our non-conference competition should prepare us for conference play. The first part of the season we will be playing out of state teams from Capital University (Columbus, Ohio), Alma College (Alma, Mich.), Ohio Northern (Ada, Ohio), Muskingum (New Concord, Ohio), and University of Wisconsin Whitewater (Whitewater, Wisc.). In addition we have conference foes – Trinity, DePauw, Sewanee, and Rhodes to contend with, just to name a few. The need to be fit and play within our system will be even more important heading into a season of this caliber.

The count down begins to opening day: where we will begin our season with our “Meet the team night” for a scrimmage against Wilmington College on August 28 th at 6:30 . We hope to see you there for a wonderful night of soccer under the lights. In the meantime, rest assured that we will be working hard so that we may Rise to Meet this seasons challenges.
