Centre women win exhibition
In the final preseason tune-up before its first game, the Centre College women's soccer team scored two goals in overtime to defeat Wilmington College 3-1 Saturday, Aug. 26, in an exhibition game in Danville, Ky.
The two teams traded goals in the first period with Wilmington striking first at the 24:47 mark to go ahead 1-0. Less than 10 minutes later, freshman forward Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) hit the back of the net to tie the match at one apiece.
Following a scoreless second period, sophomore forward Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) scored two goals within a two-minute span and the defense shutout Wilmington in the extra period for the win.
The Colonels out shot the Quakers 15-6 for the match and owned a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Centre will officially open its 2006 season, Saturday, Sept. 2, when it hosts the 2006 Wal-Mart Showcase. Transylvania University will play Capital University at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Colonels playing Alma College at 7:30 p.m.
