Women's soccer opens with shutout win

The Centre College women's soccer team scored four goals in the first half and didn't look back defeating Alma College 5-0 in the season-opening game for both teams, Saturday, Sept. 2, in Danville, Ky.

The game was played as part of the 2006 Wal-Mart Showcase, hosted by Centre. With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-0, while Alma falls to 0-1.

Sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) opened the scoring for the Colonels netting her first goal of the season at the 13:43 mark. Freshman Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) recorded her first career assist on the score.

The Colonels then added three more goals prior to the half. Senior Clay McCollum (Prospect, Ky.) scored an unassisted goal at the 23:58 mark followed by an unassisted goal by sophomore Mollie Sheron (Wooster, Ohio) at the 34:42 mark to put Centre ahead 3-0. The goal was Sheron's first goal as a Colonel.

With 39:57 on the clock, sophomore Tamaryn Tuller (Prospect, Ky.) found the back of the net for her first career goal to give Centre a 4-0 lead at the half.

The Colonels didn't waste much time in the second half as Menard netted her second goal of the night just over three minutes into the second period for the final 5-0 score. Sophomore Kate Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) recorded her first assist as a Colonel on the goal.

Centre dominated the entire match as the number show. Alma recorded only one shot the entire night, while the Colonels tallied 36 shots, including 24 shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) picked up the win for Centre playing into the second half before giving way to fellow freshmen goalkeepers Bethany Pratt (Richmond, Ky.) and Jessica Moreman (Elizabethtown, Ky.).

In the earlier match of the showcase, Transylvania University also posted a shutout, defeating Capital University 2-0.

The Showcase will continue Sunday, Sept. 3, with Transylvania meeting Alma at 11:30 a.m., followed by Centre playing Capital at 1:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
