Colonels rally for 4-3 win in women's soccer

After falling behind in the second half, the Centre College women's soccer team rallied to score two goals to defeat Capital University 4-3, Sunday, Sept. 3, in the final match of the Wal-Mart Showcase hosted by Centre, in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, which opened the season with a 5-0 win over Alma one day earlier, improves to 2-0 in the early going, while Capital falls to 0-2, after losing to Transylvania University 2-0 a day ago.

Centre jumped out to an early lead when freshman Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) found the back of the net following a deflection off the goalkeeper for her first career-goal to put the Colonels ahead 1-0.

Capital responded scoring two unanswered goals. The Crusaders' Rebecca Gardlik tied the match at one apiece at the 23:07 mark, and Brianna Dominach put Capital ahead with a goal with 35:37 on the clock.

The Colonels answered with its second goal to tie the match at two prior to halftime. Another freshman Cindy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.) scored her first career-goal off an assist from freshman Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.).

With 58:34 on the clock in the second half, Capital's Natasha Ballard hit a low shot past Centre freshman goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead.

Less than one minute later, sophomore Kate Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) took a pass from senior Clay McCollum (Prospect, Ky.) and hit the back of the net to tie the score at 3-3. It was Anderson's first goal at Centre and McCollum's first assist of the season.

The score would remain tied until freshman Katherine MacMurray (Hilton Head, S.C.) scored the game-winning goal off an assist from sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) with 75:37 on the clock. The goal was also MacMurray's first collegiate score.

The Colonels out shot Capital 27-12, while Capital held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. McAuley earned her second win of the season in goal, posting five saves.

Tranyslvania defeated Alma College 5-0 in the earlier match of the day.

Up next for Centre is a trip to Lexington, Ky., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, for the Transylvania University Showcase. The Colonels will open the showcase against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Friday at 7:00 p.m.
