Colonels continue hot start with 4-1 win
Four different players scored a goal as the Centre College women's soccer team continued its hot start to the season, defeating Thomas More College 4-1, Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels improve to 5-0 for the first time since the 1996 season, while Thomas More falls to 2-4 on the year. Centre's 1996 team had the best start in school history, opening the season 7-0, including five shutouts.
Freshman Katie Kerr (Canyon County, Calif.) opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the match when she hit the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) notched the assist on the score as the Colonels went ahead 1-0.
About eight minutes later Menard was the one scoring, hitting her sixth goal of the year for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Katherine MacMurray (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) then gave Centre a 3-0 lead prior to the half scoring her second goal of the season.
The Colonels added their fourth and final goal with 64:43 mark in the second half when freshman Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) notched her third goal of the year.
The Saints scored a late goal to pull within three, but they would get no more. Centre controlled much of the match having out shot Thomas More 22-7 to go along with an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the win in goal for the Colonels stopping all four shots she faced.
Centre will look to continue its hot start when it travels to Ada, Ohio, Saturday, Sept. 16 to take on the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
